Color Theory

Although being mostly digital, my Color Theory class felt very hands on because we had to create our own color wheels, for both RYB and CMY, and had to paint on paper. I was able to learn the contrast and familiarity different colors have with one another.

It has overall changed my whole view on color harmony as well. Even when looking at everyday objects or my environment, I can now see and tell the difference between good and bad color combinations.

The class was constructed of 4 projects:

Project 1 - Found Color

The first project was split into 4 parts;
1.1 - Found Color Documentation
1.2 - Found Color Palette
1.3a - Study of Saturation
1.3b - Saturation Mixing Tones

We had to pick w colors, so this is the Yellow Version

And this is the Pink Version of Project 1.

Project 2 - Painting

With this being the only project in class where we used colors with paint, it was a lot of fun getting the correct color after trial and error, and to create our color wheels. We had to make 2 color wheels; a chromatic one with all the base colors, and another will all of the colors we painted.

We then had to make tint and shades for 2 colors, as well as another color for tone that we made black and white and the original color. All of this while comparing them to our painted values from 1 to 10.

For the last part of our painted colors project, we could use our past swatched to make color pairs based on hue, saturation, and values.

The order from right to left, starting from the blue-white, is:

Different Hue - Different Value - Different Saturation
Different Hue - Different Value - Same Saturation
Different Hue - Same Value - Same Saturation
Same Hue - Same Value - Different Saturation
Same Hue - Different Value - Same Saturation
Same Hue - Different Value - Different Saturation
Different Hue - Same Value - Different Saturation

Project 3 - Harmony + Contrast

In the third project, we went back to digital color creation, where we would create color palettes that followed the specific rules of color harmony. Then, after picking one of the palettes created, we would pick 2 opposing words to create a color composition on.

Project 4 - Composition Contrast

This was our final project, where we made a poster of colors that conveyed an emotion. I had picked 'Intense' and 'Calm' as my 2 emotions to focus on. I picked a mix of vibrant and saturated in dark colors for my 'Intense' composition, whereas I chose some more lighter / pastel colors for my 'Calm' composition. I ended up choosing my 'Calm' composition because it would make me feel relaxed just looking at it.
