Photography

In my Photography class, we always used our phones for taking pictures, which I thought was quite simple. But after having taken this class, I understand that there is so much more to explore outside of what I learned in the class.

The class was split into 4 projects:

Project 1 - Light and Shadow

In this project, we took pictures of objects and subjects that displayed a light and a shadow. The goal of this project was to observe how light and shadow fall to create contrast and meaning to composition, while paying attention to form, process, and content. Half the pictures I took were from campus and half were from around where I lived at the time.

Project 2 - Angle and Level

In this project, we had to choose a subject to take 2 pictures of from different angles and levels. The subject I chose was my dad sitting down on a small chair.

This made me explore and play with how positioning myself when taking a picture can communicate disti-3nctly different perspectives of the same visual story.

Project 3 - Form + Image + Type

Now being able to control my subjects, I made a variety of paper shapes, while always using the same size of small paper. I had 2 paper forms I liked, one being fluid while the other was more rectangle like. After taking some pictures in the photo studio we had access to, I decided to go with my rectangle paper form.

After some editing and cropping, we could now use and place type of 3 different weights and sizes onto our picture.

Project 4 - Object in Studio + Environment

For the fourth project, we had to photograph a subject to convey its shape, materiality, and behavior in controlled lighting conditions and natural habit settings.

I picked a fountain pen as my subject, as I really like calligraphy at the time and used it whenever I wrote. I have a collection of pictures, where the pen is both on a notebook and in the photo studio with controlled lighting.
